For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

The Prayer of Confession (after silent confession)

All: Regard the prayer of Your servants and our supplication, O LORD our God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servants are praying before You. Hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and when You hear, forgive. If we are defeated before an enemy because we have sinned against You, teach us to return and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication before You, then hear from heaven and forgive the sins of Your people. When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because we have sinned against You, teach us to pray and confess Your name, and turn from our sin because You afflict us. Then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your servants, that You may teach us the good way in which we should walk. Hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive.
